Three pubs in Derbyshire, Rutland and Leicestershire will go head to head on 7 October to be crowned the East Midlands’ Best Pub, at the 2010 East Midlands Tourism Enjoy England Excellence Awards. The awards aim to find the best tourism business in the East Midlands over a range of categories including Best Pub, Bed and Breakfast and Large Visitor Attraction.

New figures show the value of the East Midlands visitor economy has increased by £68 million during 2009, a 1.3% increase on the previous year and is now worth £6.05 billion. The sector has generated 1,847 new jobs in the last 12 months.

According to a recent survey, part of an annual barometer, commissioned by East Midlands Tourism (EMT), emda’s tourist arm, an unprecedented number of factors look set to impact on the region’s tourism industry. Yet, the mood among East Midlands’ tourism businesses – from large hotels and attractions, to Tourist Information Centres and smaller guest houses remains buoyant, with 81 percent feeling confident for the months ahead. The current strategy for the visitor economy, Destination East Midlands, comes to an end this year and East Midlands Tourism, East Midlands Development Agency’s (emda’s) tourism arm, is undertaking a review to identify what the key priorities should be for tourism over the next ten years. East Midlands Tourism (EMT), the East Midlands Development Agency’s tourism arm, this week staged a conference for the region’s Tourism Information Centres.
The first of its kind to be held in the region, the event provided an opportunity for TICS to learn more about the regional tourism agenda and how EMT works with national, regional and local partners.
