Sustainability
Sustainable tourism promotes positive outcomes on the local environment, economy and infrastructure. EMT is committed to encouraging the longevity of tourism businesses by promoting sustainable practises, such as supporting local community businesses, sourcing food produce locally and encouraging visitors to use the public transport network.
The East Midlands has several iconic attractions which are internationally renowned for environmental good practise including the Peak District National Park, where much work is being done to maintain listed buildings and preserve the traditional character of villages, protect wildlife or bring back native woodlands.
EMT is working closely with national tourism organisation, VisitBritain to encourage the region’s businesses to sign up to a national scheme to promote best practise and reward the actions and success stories of individual businesses.
See www.visitbritain.com/green and www.green-business.co.uk for more information on the recommended schemes available.
Through the DMPs, EMT also implements a number of business support measures which provide advice to operators on issues such as reducing carbon emissions, waste reduction and sourcing local produce. If you would like any advice please contact your DMP.
